Surviving deals cluster at a credible 9–17% below estimated Austin retail and span SUVs, mid-size trucks, sedans, and a hatchback, from both franchise dealers and private sellers.

Methodology & How Discount Is Estimated

This report was produced by a multi-agent research harness: 14 parallel collection agents fetched live listings from the accessible Austin-metro sources across three body-style axes (all / SUV / truck), followed by a single high-reasoning screening-and-ranking pass over the pooled inventory.

1. Collect. Agents pulled every listing they could render in the $10,000–$20,000 band from CarGurus, Cars.com (dealer + for-sale-by-owner), and Craigslist by-owner. KBB and TrueCar returned HTTP 403 (anti-bot), so their coverage was backfilled via Cars.com/CarGurus.
2. Dedupe. The same VINs recur across platforms, often at slightly different prices; duplicates were merged and the lower price kept.
3. Screen. Three problem classes were removed: (a) curbstoner/scam-style listings — luxury vehicles priced like economy cars, no-VIN private posts, prices far below comparables; (b) out-of-metro or out-of-scope units — Oklahoma/Missouri/Illinois sellers, Houston-area listings, classic and commercial trucks; (c) extreme mileage/year mismatches.
4. Estimate discount. For each survivor, fair local market value was estimated at the model/trim/mileage level for the Austin metro, and discount % = (est. market value − price) ÷ est. market value. Platform "deal" badges (CarGurus "Great Deal", Cars.com "High Demand") were treated only as corroborating evidence, never as the discount itself.
5. Rank & demote. Vehicles were ranked by estimated discount, but listings whose discount was so large it more likely signals a problem than a deal were deliberately demoted — a genuine bargain is meaningfully below market yet still explainable.

These listings fell in the $10k–$20k band but were screened out — this is the salvage/suspicious filter doing its job. The dominant pattern: luxury vehicles priced like economy cars, which is the single most common used-car fraud signal. Others were out-of-metro, classic/commercial, or extreme mileage/year mismatches.

Pre-Purchase Screening Checklist

Every pick above is a candidate, not a verified clean car. None of these platforms expose title status at the search level, and a clean-looking title can itself be washed. Before buying — especially the higher-mileage trucks, the fleet-mileage late models, and any luxury vehicle — run this checklist:

• Pull a full VIN history report (Carfax or AutoCheck) to rule out salvage, rebuilt, flood, and branded titles — title washing can erase a salvage brand by re-registering the car in another state, so paperwork alone is not enough.
